The Kingdom of Thailand was invaded by the Empire of Japan soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbour on 6th December 1941. Initially Thai forces fought back, but were soon ordered to put down their arms and the Thai government signed an armistice followed by a cooperation agreement with Japan, which led to the Thai declaration of war against the United States and the British Empire.
With Japanese assistance to recover lost Thai territory taken at the end of the 19th century by the British in present day northern Malay states and the eastern Shan States in Myanmar (Burma), together with territory lost to the French in present day Cambodia, the Thais assisted the Japanese with the invasion of Burma.
Thailand became a hub for the collection of allied POW's who were sent initially to Bangkok, the Thai capital, and from there to forward areas at Ban Pong and Nong Pladuk, leading to the the most famous location of the Thai Burma railway, Kanchanaburi, the Japanese railway headquarters to link Thailand to Burma via rail, enabling troops and supplies to be sent to the Burma front, and with the intention of cutting supplies to China from India, and possibly invade India as well.
